Local Learning Opportunities

Community Lactation Access Project
Caring for and feeding babies is a learned art as much as it is a biological process. Skilled, kind, knowledgeable support is crucial in the early days. The Community Lactation Access Project is dedicated to training support people in every community, at multiple access points for parents.

Lactation Counselor Training Course
The Lactation Counselor Training Course is a comprehensive, evidence-based, college-level breastfeeding management course that includes practical skills, theoretical foundations, and competency verification.

Basic and complex technical issues are explored within the context of problem-solving and counseling strategies. This course prepares participants for professional work in the hospital, public health, and community settings. It trains participants to gain insight into clients’ problems, with a strong focus on counseling skills.

At the end of the course, participants who have completed all competencies may sit for the CLC® examination, the premier national certification in lactation management in the United States, administered by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP).

Trainings on Breastfeeding for Child Care Providers

  • Supporting Breastfeeding in Child Care online
    This interactive training module is now available on the Colorado Shines Professional Development Information System (PDIS). Using the link Login (coloradoshinespdis.com), search “breastfeeding” in the Course Catalog. In order to view the course, you will need to create an account and log in or use your existing login info (you can do this even if you are not a child care professional).The online training module is for child care professionals, but can be useful for anyone interested in gaining more information on breastfeeding in child care.
  • Childhood Obesity Prevention
    Continuing to breastfeed for the recommended amount of time can be challenging, especially when children need to be in child care. Learn practical solutions for encouraging and supporting mothers to breastfeed their babies.
  • Texas Department of State Health Services
    Content includes a series of videos/slides on: infant development, breastfeeding recommendations, bottle-feeding, introducing solids, choking, toddler, and preschool nutrition needs.
  • Breastfeeding University
    Developed by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, lactation consultants, public health professionals, educators and La Leche League leaders, these trainings will help learners to establish a working knowledge of the importance of breastfeeding and how to support mothers and families to meet their breastfeeding goals.
  • Creating a Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Setting
    This self-guided training gives informal child care providers, such as family, friends, or neighbors the basics for supporting breastfed children while in their care.

  • CDC-USBC Bi-Monthly Coalitions Webinars
    Learn how to assist breastfeeding mothers who are having difficulty with breastfeeding. This video offers simple tips for effective assistance with latching on.
  • Power Tools for Coalitions
    The United States Breastfeeding Committee hosts this series of webinars as part of its training, technical assistance, and capacity building support for the network of breastfeeding coalitions across the United States.
  • Collective Impact
    The United States Breastfeeding Committee offers a forum to coordinate opportunities for collaboration and change. Their new Strategic Framework puts into practice the principles of collaboration and specifically, collective impact.
  • Michigan Breastfeeding Monthly webinar series
    Michigan Breastfeeding Network presents the Great Lakes Breastfeeding Webinars from 1-2 pm EST on the third Tuesday of every month.
