South Boulder Road Multimodal Bus Rapid Transit Study

The South Boulder Road Bus Rapid Transit Study will look at different ways to improve safety, access, and connections for everyone traveling on South Boulder Road.

Overview

Boulder County, in partnership with the cities of Boulder, Louisville and Lafayette, is conducting a South Boulder Road transportation planning study beginning in fall 2026 and expected to be completed in summer 2027.

The study covers approximately 10 miles of South Boulder Road between Boulder at Broadway and Lafayette at 120th Street. Building on previous planning work and community input, the study will evaluate ways to improve safety, access, and connections for people walking, bicycling, taking transit, and driving.

Study Goals

The study will:

  • Evaluate opportunities to enhance public transit operations (Bus Rapid Transit).
  • Explore safer bicycle connections and a bikeway along the road.
  • Improve walking connections and crossings.
  • Study roadway safety and intersection changes.
  • Improve access to neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and destinations.
  • Develop recommendations for multimodal improvements.

Building on Previous Work

This study builds on the 2024 DRCOG South Boulder Road Corridor Study and previous community input.

Earlier work identified priorities such as safer crossings, more comfortable bicycle facilities, improved transit service, and better transportation options for people of all ages and abilities. The current study will evaluate options and develop recommendations for future improvements.

Answers to Common Questions

The South Boulder Road Multimodal Bus Rapid Transit Study will evaluate options to improve safety, access, connections, and transportation choices along South Boulder Road.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-quality bus service designed to move people more quickly, reliably, and efficiently than traditional bus routes. BRT may include features such as dedicated bus lanes, enhanced stations, more frequent service, and technology that helps buses move through traffic more smoothly. It combines the flexibility of a bus with some of the speed and convenience often associated with rail transit.

South Boulder Road serves thousands of people every day. This study will evaluate ways to improve safety and make it easier for people to walk, bicycle, take transit, and drive.
