County Contacts for Common Agricultural Questions

Many agricultural projects involve multiple Boulder County departments depending on the type of activity proposed. The resources below can help connect producers with the appropriate staff for questions related to food licensing, water systems, and building permits:

• Boulder County Public Health
  • If you plan to sell food products beyond Cottage Food Act items at a farm stand or agricultural site, you may need a license through Boulder County Public Health who can help with retail food licensing and food safety requirements.
• Boulder County Water Quality Team
  • Agricultural properties hosting classes or event gatherings may need to confirm that their water systems can support additional use or comply with permitted temporary alternatives. The Water Quality team can help answer questions about water system and septic requirements.
• Boulder County Building and Permits
  • Many agricultural structures are allowed by right and do not require planning review. However, building permits may still be required. The Building Division can help answer questions and review building code requirements before you purchase materials or structures.
