61st and Valmont Intersection Safety

61st Street & Valmont Road Intersection Improvement Project

Project Background and Scope

Boulder County Public Works is currently working on preliminary designs for improvements to the intersection of 61st Street and Valmont Road that will increase the safety of all roadway users. The proposed plans provide eastbound Valmont Road cyclists with a less-stressful alternative for making a left-hand turn onto northbound 61st Street. This will be accomplished by constructing an off-street box that will have the capacity to accommodate a queue of up to eight cyclists.

The project will reconstruct the existing intersection to provide clearly defined spaces for bicyclists and motorists that include the construction of an off-street bike box and the construction of a dedicated right-turn lane on southbound 61st Street at the intersection. Additionally, the project will construct buffered bikeable shoulders on 61st Street just north of the intersection.

How does this improve safety?

The proposed improvements will provide an option for cyclists to turn onto northbound 61st Street without having to weave across the eastbound through-lane on Valmont Road. The southbound dedicated right-turn lane on 61st Street will improve vehicle circulation by separating the right-turning traffic from the left-turning traffic on southbound 61st Street.
