One in four Americans aged 65 and over fall each year. A fall can have serious impacts on long-term health, day-to-day function, and independence. The good news is that many falls can be prevented. Join us to learn how strengthening community connections can keep you and those you care for safe with our activities during Falls Prevention Month 2026. If you are already exercising on a regular basis, keep it up! If you haven’t been active in the last few years, don’t worry. But remember to check in with your doctor before starting to find out which types of exercise are best for you.

Introduction to Ukemi

What: Ukemi is the Japanese art of taking a fall safely. In recent years, many older adults in Europe have begun training in this art to prevent injury. In this intro, we will overview what Ukemi is, the benefits of the practice, and demonstrate the physical techniques used in classes. Instructor Randy Thompson holds a 3rd degree blackbelt in Shinshin Toitsu Aikido.

PickleFall: Safe Falling for Pickleball

What: Every pickleball player will fall sometime – learn to roll with it and get back to the game! In this workshop, discuss where falls tend to happen in pickleball and how to avoid them, then get on the mats to learn falling techniques from the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Tai Chi for Arthritis and to Prevent Falls

Fee: The fee is $35 for residents and non-residents.

What: This class focuses on relieving the symptoms of arthritis, pain, and enhancing overall healthy movement with Tai Chi Forms 1 and 2. Participants do not need to have arthritis to benefit from the exercises that improve balance and reduce risk and fear of falling. Tai Chi is safe for all abilities with or without arthritis. Tai Chi has been proven to prevent falls, increase balance and movement, and improve quality of life for participants. This form of Tai Chi can be safely progressed to each person’s needs.

Dance for Balance

What: Enjoy free dance classes offered by 3rd Law Dance/Theater during Falls Prevention Month. Based on the renowned Dance for PD® methodology, classes are designed for people living with Parkinson’s but benefit anyone with mobility concerns. No dance experience is required. Seated or standing, explore diverse dance styles and address balance, flexibility, and confidence through joyful physical activity. Instructors: Taught by dance professionals trained in the Mark Morris Dance for PD® method, part of a global network in 300+ communities.

In Japanese martial arts, Ukemi translates to “receiving body” or “receiving technique” and refers to the art of falling safely. Falls are a leading cause of injury across all demographics. In this series, older adults will learn the principles of falling without injury. After finding center through meditation and Japanese yoga, participants will warm up the body with light core exercises and stretches, then practice safe falling on a forgiving matted surface. Instructor: Randy Thompson, 3rd degree black belt in Aikido.

Seated Tai Chi

Where: Lafayette Senior Center (103 S. Iowa Ave., Lafayette)

What: Often described as meditation in motion, seated Tai Chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. It helps older adults get the health and wellness benefits of Tai Chi without the risk of falling. Tai Chi also improves flexibility, immune system, sleep, happiness, sense of self-worth, strength, cardiovascular endurance, and concentration.

Registration is not necessary for Seated Tai Chi.

Preventing Arthritis Related Fall Risks

Presented by City of Boulder Older Adult Services

When: Friday, Sept. 4, 1:30-3 p.m.

Where: West Age Well Center (909 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder)

What: Arthritis is joint inflammation, and affects joints, surrounding joint tissue and other connective tissue creating postural imbalance and an increased risk for falls. A healthy, well-balanced diet and weight control is very important for arthritis pain management as is low-impact activity. This program will review weight loss tips, foods that increase and decrease inflammation, and the science of how low-impact activity can increase strength and flexibility, reduce joint pain, combat fatigue, and therefore reduce the risk of fall related injuries. Instructor: Erin Williams, MSN, CN, LMP is the founder of EZBalance, a health and wellness company.

Minding Your Balance™ Workshop: Mind Body Exercises to Improve Balance and Prevent Falls

Introduction to Feldenkrais: Move With Ease

What: Increase ease and range of motion using the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education. Improve flexibility and coordination and rediscover an innate capacity for graceful and efficient movement. Participants will walk, stand, sit in a chair, or lie on the floor in a variety of comfortable positions, and must be able to get up and down from a mat safely to join this series. Instructor: Gil Kelly personally trained with Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais and has been teaching the Feldenkrais Method for 40 years.

What: Falls are the leading cause of injury for people over age 65. This free program was designed to help individuals recognize their concerns about falling, as well as the hazards in their home and community that contribute to falls. The program is a two-hour presentation that will discuss fall prevention topics such as home safety, safety in the community, talking with your physician, nutrition, the significance of exercise, vision, and medications that contribute to falls. Fall prevention topics will be presented by Physical Therapist Sharon Wilson and Occupational Therapist Whitney Todaro.
