North Foothills Bikeway Feasibility Study

North Foothills Bikeway Feasibility Study

US 36/North Foothills Highway has the highest bicycle ridership of any road in unincorporated Boulder County, and probably the region. In 2020 the CDOT bike counter recorded 91,961 bike trips on the road. This road also has more crashes that involve a cyclist than any other road in unincorporated county.

Boulder County has started a Feasibility Study to look at potential options to create a bikeway along US Hwy. 36/N. Foothills Hwy that is separated from auto traffic and would connect the Town of Lyons and the City of Boulder.

The reason for the study is to identify ways to improve safety for cyclists. The study will focus on land that is largely within the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) right-of-way. The county is working with CDOT, the Town of Lyons and the City of Boulder on the study.

Public meetings will be held starting in February. The feasibility study is scheduled to be completed by June 2024.

The planned outcomes of the study are:

    • Determine if a bikeway in this location is feasible
    • Identify bikeway alignment(s) for further consideration between Lyons and Boulder
    • Estimated cost of a bikeway
    • Note: This study does not involve construction of any sort
