District Attorney’s Office Warns Public of Ongoing Impersonation Scam
The District Attorney’s Office is alerting community members to an ongoing scam in which a person(s) is impersonating an employee of the District Attorney’s Office to defraud community members. Multiple incidents have been reported in recent days, involving false claims that a person in custody at the Boulder County Jail requires immediate payment for release from custody and/or placement in a treatment program.
In one incident, a community member received a call from an individual claiming to be an employee of the District Attorney’s Office. The caller falsely stated that the victim’s daughter had been accepted into a behavioral health treatment program and could be released from jail if immediate payment was made to secure a monitoring device. Believing the information to be legitimate, the victim sent $600 through Zelle. This incident, and other calls, demonstrate a
pattern of scammers using the names of real District Attorney employees and referencing actual individuals in custody to increase the appearance of legitimacy. The District Attorney’s Office is working with local law enforcement agencies to actively investigate the source of these calls and identify those responsible.
The District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement remind the community:
- The DA’s Office and law enforcement will never request money over the phone, through electronic transfer services, or via third-party individuals.
- If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide personal information or send money.
- You should call legitimate, publicly available phone numbers for agencies, including the District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office, to verify the legitimacy of a call received from that agency.
- Report suspected scams immediately to your local law enforcement agency.
