Hybrid, remote, and some in-person time at Boulder BCPH office, Sundquist Building, 3482 Broadway, Boulder, 80304. Field work opportunities may arise for outbreak responses.
Program Summary:
The Communicable Disease Control Program responds to all reportable diseases and conditions, including individual cases and outbreaks.
This unpaid practicum offers the opportunity to serve as an integral member of the Communicable Disease Epidemiology Team. Under the supervision of a Communicable Disease Epidemiologist, the Enteric Disease Epidemiology Intern performs a variety of complex activities related to enteric disease surveillance, including assisting in investigating reportable diseases and outbreaks, implementing control measures, providing epidemiological support for the team, and completing a data analysis project.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead investigations of campylobacteriosis and giardia cases and assist in investigations of other reportable enteric diseases.
- Assist with other reportable diseases and communicable disease investigations and response as needed, including data management.
- Perform data analysis and reporting for Campylobacteriosis case data.
- Assist with communicable disease emergency preparedness and response.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in a science or health-related field and currently enrolled in a master’s level public health program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop internal and external partnerships.
- Organization, collaboration, and research skills.
- Knowledge of public health systems.
- Knowledge of epidemiologic principles related to surveillance, investigation, and control of communicable diseases.
- Knowledge of the epidemiology of and the control measures for routinely reported communicable diseases (i.e., norovirus, influenza).
- Knowledge and experience in using statistical analysis software, preferably R and/or Power BI
- Group process, presentations, and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of emergency management and Incident Command Systems (ICS) is desirable.
Special Requirements:
- Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation. Some immunizations and/or TB tests may be required (at the expense of BCPH). Intern must comply with these requirements before the start date.

Training and Orientation:
- The Communicable Disease Epidemiologist and other program staff will provide training and orientation.
- The intern is encouraged to participate in meetings and other trainings, as appropriate.
