Seed Collection Scout

Time Commitment & Minimum Age: Volunteer for two scouting sessions per season (6-8 hours total) May to October. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Program Summary:

Volunteers identify native seed that is soon to be ready for collection (ripe seed) on various Boulder County properties. Volunteers work with agency staff to review species of priority, scout for ripe seed, and recognize appropriate sized populations on open space to help determine what seed will be collected for episodic volunteer projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Record findings on a datasheet, and communicates with ecologist for review.
  • Drive to assigned sites several times before a project and report findings.
  • Examine several priority plant specimens in various locations on the property.
  • Identify and record other plant species, native and non-native, on potential collection site.
  • Collect samples as needed to bring back to the department staff for further review.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have participated in seed collection volunteer events for at least one year prior to scouting
  • Ability to identify noxious and invasive weed species
  • Preferred education in biology, ecology, natural sciences
  • Familiarity with Colorado ecosystems and flora
  • Familiarity using/desire to identify plants using a dichotomous key
  • Good physical shape and ability to work on natural and potentially steep terrain
  • Abide by all open space rules and regulations, and set an example for other park visitors
  • Must have personal transportation
