Registration required, classes held Thursday afternoons through Dec. 6

Boulder County, Colo. - The “National Caregiver Training Program,” offered by the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging, a division of Community Services, begins Thursday, Oct. 25, in Louisville. The course for family caregivers of older adults helps them learn and practice the essential skills necessary to provide quality care for frail older loved ones, whether in your home, or elsewhere.

When: Thursdays, Oct. 25 – Dec. 6 (skipping Thanksgiving), 1:30–4:30 p.m.
Where: The Lodge at Balfour, 1331 East Hecla Drive, Louisville

The National Caregiver Training Program is designed to help family caregivers feel more confident about the care they provide. The course is taught by a registered nurse and covers topics such as providing personal care, using a wheelchair safely, managing medications, taking vital signs, controlling infection, preventing falls, caring for someone on bedrest, using local resources, and more. Each caregiver receives Quick Tips for Caregivers, a home reference guide.

A family caregiver who took the course said, “I’m so glad to have taken this class. I feel more capable as a caregiver now, and I’m going to recommend the course to other caregivers I know!”

The course is open to Boulder County residents providing local or long-distance care for a relative, partner or friend who is 60 or over, or of any age if the person has dementia. There is no charge, but donations are appreciated. Financial assistance for respite care (substitute elder care) during class periods is available.
