The Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission (LCAC) promotes, nurtures, and celebrates the visual, performing, and language arts by providing opportunities for the public to appreciate and enjoy art in its various forms. The deadline to apply is October 20. For more information how to apply, click here. The Historic Preservation Board advises the City Council in matters relating to historically significant structures and properties in the community. The application will remain open until the position is filled. For more information on how to apply, click here. The Public Art Committee (PAC), a subcommittee of the Cultural Arts Commission (LCAC), is an advisory group appointed by City Council to review proposals and make recommendations regarding the selection and display of public artwork. The deadline to apply is November 1. For more information on how to apply click here. The Senior Advisory Board of Lafayette Senior Services advises City Council and Senior Services staff in matters pertaining to the 55 and older population of Lafayette. The application will remain open until the position is filled. For more information on how to apply, click here. The Waste Reduction Advisory Board is appointed by City Council to promote waste reduction and zero waste awareness and programs in Lafayette. There is no deadline, as applications are accepted at any time. For more information on how to apply, click here.

The Health Equity Advisory Committee reviews Sugar-sweetened Beverage Product Distribution Tax (SSBPD Tax) funding proposals and make recommendations to staff and the city manager for programmatic funding. The role of the committee is advisory and technical, not political in nature, and members do not serve in an advocacy role for either agencies or issues. Committee members provide technical and professional expertise and lived experience to assist with the allocation of funding for the most effective ways to address health equity and chronic disease associated with sugary drink consumption. While the Committee seeks City of Boulder residents, they are also accepting applications from Boulder County residents. Meetings are approximately two hours long and held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. During a typical review period there will be ~7-10 hours of weekly time commitment to review applications, attend committee deliberations and attend applicant interviews. Outside of review periods, there will be less time commitment and meeting are used to plan for future fund rounds and to shape evaluation and metrics discussions. Boulder City Council and Lafayette City Council both passed Indigenous Peoples Day resolutions in 2016. Part of this work is promoting and honoring the existence, culture and contributions of the original inhabitants of North America. Some great events will be happening this month to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.

Roots of Injustice, Seeds of Change: Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples at the First United Methodist Church, Spruce and 14th Street, Boulder, 3 – 5 pm.

In this participatory workshop for high school students and adults, we will experience the European colonization of Turtle Island from the point of view of Native peoples. Motus Theater – Learning about the Past, Envisioning a More Equitable Future at the Boulder Public Library, Canyon Theater, 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm. Includes: 4:30-5:45 pm a film screening of Know Your History? Rocks Karma Arrows (Act 1) exploring how Boulder was founded; 6 – 6:30 pm poetry by Tanaya Winder (Southern Ute, Duckwater Shoshone, and Pyramid Lake Paiute Nations); 6:30 – 7:30 pm Indigenous in Boulder: Indigenous leaders speak about living and working in Boulder.

Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration with the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) at NARF, 1506 Broadway, 10 am – 4pm. This event will include an opening prayer, a historical overview of Native history in the region, lunch, a history of NARF, a talk on current Indian Country events and issues, and open dialogue with NARF staff and Native speakers.

Mini Pow Wow, Teach-in and Friendship Dance at the Central Park Bandshell in Boulder, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Lakota Elder Lee Plenty Wolf will speak about the oral history of Boulder that has been handed-down by Boulder’s Indigenous residents, explain the meaning of four indigenous Native American dances and the importance of large gatherings in indigenous cultures. The four dances will be performed with drum accompaniment. Attendees will learn a circle and friendship dance. Organizer: White Horse Creek Council

Taking Steps Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples in Boulder at the First Congregational Church, Broadway and Pine Street, Boulder, 6:30 – 9 pm.

What would right relationship with Native peoples look like in Boulder? What steps can we take in that direction?
