Registration required, classes held Thursday afternoons

Boulder County, Colo. – The “National Caregiver Training Program,” offered by the Boulder
County Area Agency on Aging, a division of Community Services, begins Thursday,
April 13 in Longmont. The course for family caregivers of older adults helps
them learn and practice the essential skills necessary to provide quality care
for frail older loved ones living at home.

The
“National Caregiver Training Program” is designed to help family caregivers
feel more confident about the care they provide. Taught by a registered nurse,
the course covers topics including caring for someone on bedrest, providing
personal care, using a wheelchair safely, managing medications, taking vital
signs, controlling infection, preventing falls and using local resources. Each
caregiver receives the home reference guide, “Quick Tips for Caregivers.”

The
course is open to Boulder County residents providing local or long-distance
care for a relative, partner or friend who is 60 or over, or of any age if the
person has dementia. There is no charge, but donations are appreciated.
Financial assistance for respite care (substitute elder care) during class
periods is available.

A
family caregiver who recently took the course said, “Thank you! I took the
course last year, and it has been invaluable. My mother had a stroke recently
and I spent two months taking care of her. The class made doing that so much
easier. I feel like I had a real leg up. I’m so glad I took the course.”
