Fallen Climber First Flatiron
Boulder County, Colo. -
On
Sunday, August 6, 2017 at approximately 5:58 pm, Boulder County Communications
received a report of a fallen climber near the base of the First Flatiron,
above the Blue Bell Shelter, Chitaqua Park.
The call came in from a hiker in the area.
Rocky
Mountain Rescue Group, American Medical Response ambulance service, and the
Boulder County Sheriff’s Office responded.
An 18
year-old male was subsequently located near the bottom of he First Flatiron by
a Wilderness First Responder and another hiker in the area. The injured climber was not breathing and had
no pulse. Medical treatment was
attempted, but it was to no avail given the extent of the injuries. A Boulder City Open Space Ranger arrived soon
thereafter. The climber was pronounced
deceased by medical personnel, having suffered significant
trauma from the fall.
Preliminarily
it appears the male was climbing near the top of the First Flatiron alone. He posted an image on social media,
depicting that particular vantage point shortly before the call reporting a
fallen climber.
The
investigation is being conducted jointly by the Sheriff’s Office and Boulder
County Coroner. The name of the decedent
is being withheld until the next of kin has been notified. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
This event was documented under Boulder County Sheriff's Office case report: 17-4593.
