LGBT older adults have lived through times when overt
discrimination was common. Fewer legal protections in the past meant there was
little they could do when their housing, jobs, and basic safety were
threatened. Many are concerned these times could return as they get older. LGBT
elders can worry about feeling forced back into the closet just to receive the
care they need, as they face a wall of assumptions about who they are and the
lives they have led.
Project Visibility provides training to help make respectful
care for older LGBT adults possible. It is an award-winning program developed
by the AAA, a Boulder County Community Services Division, based on extensive focus
group research with area LGBT older adults. The training includes a short film in which elders speak about their lives,
strengths, wishes, and concerns about the aging services network. Participants
are given the tools to create a welcoming environment. They practice the skills
needed to anticipate questions and concerns of LGBT older adults, and how to intervene
when discrimination or hostility occurs. At the end of the training, everyone
leaves with a resource-paced manual.

The deadline to register is noon on Thursday, April
