Home Energy Conservation

Colorado generates most of its electricity by burning coal. Coal-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of air pollution in Colorado and in Boulder County.

Energy efficiency means delivering the same (or more) services using less energy. The less energy we use, the less energy we need to generate at power plants, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves the quality of our air.

Energy efficiency also helps the economy by saving residents and businesses millions of dollars in energy costs. Energy-efficient solutions can reduce the energy bill for many homeowners and businesses by 20 to 30 percent!

5 Energy STAR Steps for Your Home

  1. Change 5 Lights. Replace your 5 most frequently used lights or the bulbs in them with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. These bulbs provide high-quality lighting, last longer than typical incandescent bulbs, and use up to 66% less energy.
  2. Look for ENERGY STAR Products. Available in more than 40 product categories, including lighting and home appliances, these products have been proven to use less energy than your average appliance.
  3. Heat and cool smartly. Have your heating and cooling equipment serviced annually and remember to replace air filters regularly. Use a programmable thermostat, and when it’s time to replace old equipment, choose an ENERGY STAR qualified model.
  4. Seal up your home. Seal air leaks, add insulation, and choose ENERGY STAR qualified windows.
Tell family and friends. We’re asking you to help spread the word that energy efficiency is good for your home and good for our environment. Start by emailing this page to a friend.
