Colorado Communities File Lawsuit Against Oil Giants for Climate Change Costs

Costs of climate change impacts estimated to top one hundred million dollars by 2050

The Colorado communities of Boulder County, San Miguel County, and the City of Boulder–with legal support from EarthRights International, the Hannon Law Firm, and Niskanen Center–have filed a lawsuit against Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil, two oil companies with significant responsibility for climate change.

The communities have demanded that these companies pay their fair share of the costs associated with climate change impacts so that the costs do not fall disproportionately on taxpayers. Learn more…

On April 17, 2018, the Colorado communities of Boulder County, the City of Boulder, and San Miguel County held a rally to announce the filing of a lawsuit against Suncor and ExxonMobil requiring these companies to help pay the costs of adapting to climate change

Elected officials from the three communities were joined by speakers from EarthRights International, 350 Colorado, the Sierra Club, Earth Guardians.
